Kickback came against Facebook and Uber in February from an unexpected source, the Australian government stood up to Facebook and stepped in to protect their local news assets.
That was until Facebook pulled the plug to show Australia who was in charge of the media today.
That battle has just begun.
Uber suffered a severe blow to its “Gig Economy” business model, when the courts in London ruled against them to protect couriers and drivers from exploitation.
These “reforms” are being led from an unlikely source, from governments and the courts.
For example, a recent court case in London against Uber, brought by a newly formed group called themselves App Drivers and Courier Union (ADCU)
Apparently Uber argued in court that they were not a transport company, they were a technology company that connected drivers to customers.
They was laughed out of court and drivers and couriers stand to gain up to £10k in back-money.
This case has repercussions world wide for the gig economy, including here in Ireland.
With traditional trade unions dead in the water, new groups are emerging to defend workers rights.
The battle cry seems to be:
"Trade Unions are dead Long live the Unions"
Western governments seem to be moving towards a “Universal Income”, partly because of the pandemic, as they bring everyone in to some sort of state payment in an effort to save capitalism.
There is no guarantee that the economy will re-start when they take their finger off the “Pause Button”
Massive debt, hyper inflation, increased interest rates and the rapid progress to digital money, coupled with the fall in the value of pensions and perhaps a “bail in” will necessitate some radical action on the part of government to regulate the economy and society.
People will agree for the sake of stability, security and peace, the result is likely to be The New World Order.
