Oyster Farm Blues

Tony Grant theweepaper@gmail.com Edition 2 March 2021

Here is an example of one of the cages that broke away from the Oyster Farm.
This one contains a few remaining Oysters that did not escape into the sea.
Among the many concerns that have arisen, is the cross - fertilization of this species with the native species, resulting in a new variant.
A clean up of the area has taken place in recent days as a result of complaints to DCC (who helped them get a licence to operate in this area)

Recent Recommendations to DCC to improve the operation of the Oyster Farm are:

  1. Each Cage should be tagged for traceable purposes.
  2. Each Cage should be manufactured to a minimum standard.
  3. A lanyard should be attached to each cage to prevent it breaking away from its moorings.
  4. The Moorings should be constructed in such a way as not to collapse at each Spring Tide.
  5. A “Farm to Fork” traceability scheme should be put in place by The Department of Agriculture to ensure that the water quality remains safe for swimming in that area.
