The town of Buncrana and surrounding areas have been hit hard since the economic crash, through emigration and unemployment. An opportunity has arisen that could provide us with a way to recovery.
A Community Resource Centre would provide a focal point in the town where people could come together for support and be supported in an effort to heal and to grow.
We don’t need to list all the things that can go wrong in a family because they are many and they are varied. Professionals tell us that early intervention is the key to solving most of these problems and allowing people to move on with their lives before they become dependent on artificial rescue methods.
A Community Resource Centre could be a hive of activity where family members would be welcome at any time of the day to drop in to a relaxed atmosphere where they can find help and support of various kinds, with an emphases on “the green prescription” or the holistic approach to self-help and guidance.
The Old Garda Station is ideally located in the town for such a purpose and would be ideally suited with reception rooms downstairs and rooms upstairs for more private work.
For Sale By Public Auction June 2021
The building is in public ownership and is managed by the Office of Public Works (OPW). A proposition must be put in place as soon a possible and a strong voice must be raised in order to secure this asset for the town. It would be a crying shame if we let it slip through our hands and it ended up in private ownership as a trophy home for some rich developer.
The OPW proposes to sell it off at public auction in June 2021 unless a proposition can be put to Donegal County Council to lease the property for the town. DCC will not do this, unless people come forward from the community and ask for it to be kept in public ownership and used in a most productive way for the people of Buncrana.
